On behalf of Swiss Higher Education Institutions and as a community engagement, SWITCH has provided a startup support for the SEB Consortium for three years until December 31, 2018. To this end SWITCH has become a Principal Member of the SEB Consortium, having received signed Letters of Intent (LOI) to use the Safe Exam Browser (SEB) in the near future from several Swiss Higher Education Institutions, representing more than 50% of all students enrolled at Swiss Higher Education Institutions.
SWITCH's principal membership in the SEB Consortium is considered as a community engagement and startup support. SWITCH's principal membership in the SEB Consortium has a duration of totally three years and will end on December 31, 2018. As from January 1, 2019, the SEB Consortium has to be self-sustained and has to be supported by the other members of the SEB Consortium.
Through SWITCH's Principal Membership, all Swiss Higher Education Institutions receive automatically free Silver Membership through their association with SWITCH. Feature requests and development goals for the SEB suggested by Swiss HEI will be collected and prioritised by the SIG e-Assessment.
As community of experts, the SIG e-Assessment has been mandated by SWITCH to exercise SWITCH's principal membership wihin the SEB Consortium on behalf of SWITCH. As Principal Member SWITCH's mandate includes building a feature list for the SEB, as well as suggesting and prioritsing SEB development goals together with the other Principal Members of the SEB Consortium. All Swiss HEI's that have written a LOI to SWITCH with regards to SEB shall be entitled to one vote for decision making within the SIG e-Assessment with regards to the SWITCH SEB Consortium mandate.
The SEB Consortium is the body which sustains ongoing funding of the Safe Exam Browser open source project to continue its maintenance, development and support activities. SWITCH appoints a consortium manager who will provide administrative support to the SEB Consortium, and ensure the day-to-day running of the consortium. ETH Zurich provides the infrastructure for the management and the software engineering of the SEB project.
