SIG Open Educational Resources

This SIG on Open Educational Ressources (OER) is intended for people who deal with the conceptional and practical aspects of creating, sharing and re-using OER.

On the eduhub days 2009 in Baden an interactive discussion session took place to bring together different views on OER. The resulting list of topics/expectations which evolved from this discussion are displayed below.

Activities

  • Summer 2012: online-meeting - discussion about feedback white paper
  • 23 March 2011: “International Perspectives and Initiatives - OER at Universities” eduhub days 2011 - Speaker: Abel Caine from UNESCO / Moderation: Ricarda T.D. Reimer (SIG OER)
  • 21 April 2010: meeting to discuss next steps.
    1. Contact potential supporters for the white paper. Submit white paper to CRUS
    2. Quick survey about OER strategies and activities at swiss HE institutions
  • 28 January 2010: presentation of the the white paper at the eduhub days and at the ETWG meeting (ETWG meeting minutes)
  • 25 January 2010: Version 1 of SIG OER White Paper ready
  • 15 January 2010: meeting
  • 14 October 2009: meeting
  • the first SIG meeting took place in Zurich on 29 May 2009. The minutes can be found here.

Expectations with regard to contents

  • Develop a strategy
    • Explain why OER are important for higher education members and institutions/What are their benefits?
    • What is needed to establish/promote an OER culture in higher education?
  • Quality of OER
    • Is quality assurance system necessary or what kind of quality assurance process is necessary?
    • What strategies / mechanisms for quality assurance are feasible?
  • Improvements for the repository SWITCHcollection
    • how can institutions get involved?
    • implementation of specific institutional quality assurance mechanisms
    • commentary and keywords for optimizing searches (metadata: optimizing and finding)
  • Legal aspects
    • Copyright and usage rights: How to enable authors and lower barriers

Expectations with regard to goals

  • The SIG should be a platform for exchange of ideas and information
  • The SIG should aim at concrete and usable results e.g.
    • collection of arguments
    • suggestions for improvements of SWITCHcollection
    • guidance for institutions; ‘How to introduce OER’, ‘How to manage the quality of OER’, …
