ELBA2 — Low-threshold Usage of Single Tools

We want to present the idea of ELBA (Building Blocks of E-Learning) that provides low-threshold usage of single tools such as wiki, forum, survey and test for beginners and users who do not want to focus on media technology handling. Instead of offering the entire functionality of a powerful LMS like ILIAS, ELBA2 will show only the necessary tool for the current scenario and fade out features that are not used within this context. The tools are ready for immediate use. The administration for the service provider is automated. In addition, ELBA2 provides a set of didactical scenarios and documentation for all offered tools.

Lifelong Learning Transfer: Perception of a Trendy Issue

The aim of this session is to discuss the different perceptions of the Lifelong Learning Concept at Swiss Institutions of Higher Education. In order to animate the debate, a short presentation about LLL-transfer-project (1 slide) and the results of the survey about the implementation of LLL-learning in HEI's strategies (2nd and 3rd slides) will be shown at the beginning.

Needs, questions, suggestions, and experiences will be discussed starting from 3 questions:

What does Lifelong Learning mean to you?

  1. How is Lifelong Learning implemented at your university (what works, why, who does it and how?
  2. Is Lifelong Learning mentioned in your strategy?
  3. Are there any internal or external Lifelong Learning projects?

Monitoring Logfiles

In this table we would like to discuss the following questions: How do the participants actually use the logfiles that are available in their learning management systems? What are the needs of the participants concerning logfiles in a LMS? What kind of benefits would they expect from a monitoring tool based on logfiles? Also we will present a draft of a model and compare the differences between the model and the expectations of the participants.

Open Elements in a Closed System: E-Learning at the University of Applied Sciences, Tallinn, Estonia

Developments at the University of Applied Science are presented as a case study on the interplay between open and closed approaches in an institutional context. The influence of country-wide initiatives and programs will also be briefly looked at. Examples of open e-learning resources will be taken from a variety of fields.

Out of the SWITCHtoolbox

SWITCH is about to launch a new service called SWITCHtoolbox. At this table we will shortly explain what a Virtual Organisation (VO) is, how the service is built up and how it functions. We then hope to discuss with you ideas how SWITCHtoolbox can be used in the context of teaching and learning, and what tools would you like to see integrated in this service. Maybe there will even be some time for a short hands-on demonstration.

Secure Online Exams with Safe Exam Browser (SEB) for Everyone

SEB is a web browser environment to carry out online exams safely by locking a computer, thus preventing students from using unauthorised resources. It can easily be used together with the learning management systems ILIAS, Moodle and other web based e-assessment systems. Highly sophisticated exam scenarios are possible not only by using web technologies, but SEB also allows restricted use of 3rd party applications. For example, your students can calculate with Excel or use a microscope camera and upload the results to your quiz.

We will show you how SEB works and discuss how you can use SEB in your institution.

What's going on in the SIG E-Portfolio

During this session, we will provide a short update about what has been undertaken so far by the SIG E-Portfolio (i.e. portfolio puzzle, E-Portfolio event organization, Shibboleth module for Mahara, further development, etc.). Moreover, we will report on the results achieved by the University of Geneva's team during the SWITCH AAA E-Portfolio pre-study (phase 1) and will talk about the future activities we planned to accomplish during phase 2.
