From portfolios to e-portfolio practice

Theories behind the success of e-portfolio projects in academic and non-academic settings

Keynote by Dominique-Alain Jan, Open University

This keynote is based on the author's doctoral research on the transfer of e-portfolio practice from the learning place to the workplace, as well as drawing on his 15 years of expertise with e-portfolios. It addresses three main themes: 1) A short history of the concept of paper-based and subsequently web-based portfolios, and their global development; 2) an overview of how e-portfolios are used in contemporary education and at the workplace for documenting soft and hard skills, on a lifelong learning basis; 3) a presentation of successful and unsuccessful e-portfolio projects in Oceania and in Europe, including Switzerland. The conclusion will suggest a model for improving acceptance, diffusion and transfer of e-portfolio practice, together with a consideration of how emerging technologies (Open Badges, Block Chain) can enchance this, from education to professional life (and beyond).
