Tablet books: your courses’s material in Harry Potter newspaper style

Andrea Back, UNISG

Recently announced tools for the design and self-publishing of interactive e-books – like iBooks Author – allow teachers to bring their textbooks and other learning material to media tablets. In this workshop we will discuss ideas and questions about such "rich-media tablet books": What is the added-value, where is the innovation in tablet books? Will they proliferate in the learning place? How can we engage and enable us, the teaching content creators, to use this kind of authoring tool in effective and innovative ways? What would be your first tablet book project? We will share our project ideas and hope to kick-off a community of interest and knowledge-sharing around this new opportunity for mobile learning and content communication.

Online exams with Safe Exam Browser (SEB) – Using additional web applications

Daniel R. Schneider, ETHZ

SEB is a web browser environment to carry out online exams safely by locking a computer and thereby preventing students from accessing unauthorised resources.

Besides quizzes and e-assessments with LMS like Moodle or ILIAS, SEB will soon also support using additional web based applications during exams, such as Google Docs and other Web 2.0 tools.

We want to discuss such smart exam scenarios and explain upcoming improvements like the SEB Server feature for securing exam computers including student notebooks. Your feedback will help us to make SEB more secure AND at the same time easier to use.

BYOD, e-books and #flipclass

Martin Vögeli, ZFH

In this workshop we will talk about the idea behind "bring your own device" (BYOD), where learners bring their own mobiles, notebooks, tables etc. to class, operating system independent open e-books and the flipped classroom, which means delivering instruction online and moving homework into the classroom (twitter hashtag #flipclass). We’ll alternate short inputs and discussions about experiences and ready to use technology available for educational use.

ELBA – Individual applications for engaging students in lectures

Julia Kehl, ETHZ

In this learning café we present the concept and didactic use of individual ELBA applications (ELBA: building blocks of e-learning) in concrete learning arrangements. ELBA’s aim is to provide low-threshold single applications (wiki, forum, survey, test and a platform for file exchange and collaborative work).

These uncomplicated tools are designed for immediate student use in the classroom, with the aims of engaging them in lectures and helping them to organise and simplify collaborative work and learning. In the learning café we illustrate how these ELBA tools work, and discuss the didactic scenarios in which they may be usefully deployed.

docendo – Authoring and management of Open Educational Resources (OER)

Jonas Lanz, Benno Volk; ETHZ

docendo, part of the SWITCHtoolbox, is an open-source authoring and management platform which enables users to create engaging e-learning courses, learning objects, tests and quizzes. It allows the integration of existing materials and multimedia content (images, charts, videos, animations, etc.) simply and intuitively.

docendo is also a central repository: It has integrated the Learning Object Metadata (LOM) to facilitate effective retrieval of all resources and offers the possibility to define individual copyrights with Creative Commons licenses. Authorised authors may access and re-use resources. A collaborative authoring process supports organisational e-learning and the concept of Open Educational Resources (OER). Content can be exported in various formats for distribution via Learning Management Systems, HTML or CD/DVD.

In this session we will present docendo and its basic functions. We will also discuss the basic principles behind producing and sharing learning content and define possible scenarios within the community.

Implementing mobile solutions

Thomas Sammer, UNISG

This workshop targets the challenge of "implementing mobile solutions". The workshop starts with an introduction to different mobile technologies and different ways and approaches of implementing mobile solutions. We will talk about the latest technological innovations (HTML5-Apps and mobile development frameworks) and the major challenges for the development of mobile applications. In the second part of the workshop we will share lessons learned by the mobile app project of the University of St. Gallen and invite workshop participants to share their experiences and expectations as well.

academe – Learning and testing cards

Karin Niffeler, UZH; Piero Altomare, addoit GmbH

academe is an application which serves high school students and teachers in Switzerland to create and use their own learning- and testing-cards as well as to share them with their fellow students. Designed in association with the University and the students, academe is an optimised way to learn and retain new information. It allows you to easily create and study flashcards without the hassle of having to buy and write on actual note cards. What is even better, is that through the participation of other students with an AAI account, the students do not have to create their own sets.

SWITCHcast – Video solution for education

Markus Buerer, SWITCH

SWITCHcast is a video management system which is integrated in your daily process with video, like lecture recording, training videos, exam preparations or communication training. SWITCHcast is integrated in your LMS (ILIAS, Moodle, OLAT) and allows your students to see all videos on a desktop computer or on a mobile handheld.

This presentation shows you all possible use cases with SWITCHcast and explains you the world’s easiest video recording system for education.

E-portfolio guidelines for higher education

Céline Restrepo, Nadia Spang Bovey, UNIL; Elisabeth Berg, UZH; Andreas Hediger, FFHS; Patrick Roth, UNIGE

Although there is abundant literature on portfolios, it can be difficult to understand the scope of conditions, changes and consequences to be expected when e-portfolios are introduced in (higher) education. The need for guidelines to help decision makers, teachers and students determine their course of action and successfully enter the e-portfolio process, had been pointed out in the SIG e-Portfolio survey (2010). Therefore, one work package of the AAA PLE-UNIGE.9 project has been dedicated to the elaboration of these guidelines. In this presentation, we will explain the concept of these guidelines and show their current content.

DICE – How to approach digital copyright problems

Anna Picco-Schwendener, Elisabetta Frick, Marcello Baggi, Stefano Tardini, USI

Professor Max finds a well-illustrated course summary in the Internet. Is he allowed to use it during his anatomy class? Sonya, a medicine student, discovers the same summary online. Is she allowed to share it on Dropbox with her classmates?

Questions like these emerge when dealing with electronic works. During this session you will learn how to approach your copyright problems. In small groups you will work through a case study and afterwards discuss your solutions and ideas with a legal expert. In this way you can experience how the DICE methodology provides helpful guidance in approaching the above questions.
